Hemisfair Conservancy Welcomes Susan Steves Thompson as New Executive Director

The Hemisfair Conservancy, the philanthropic arm of Hemisfair, is pleased to announce the selection of Susan Steves Thompson as the new Executive Director of the Hemisfair Conservancy, effective July 15, 2024.  Thompson brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in the nonprofit sector. She will enhance the organization’s mission to serve as a powerful conduit of philanthropy to elevate San Antonio by ensuring exceptional quality and longevity of the Hemisfair public spaces and their amenities for generations.

We are thrilled to welcome Susan Thompson to our team,” said Chris Talley, Chairman of the Board. “Her extensive experience and visionary leadership make her the perfect choice to lead Hemisfair’s philanthropic efforts and build on our strong foundation. We look forward to achieving new heights under her guidance.”

A native San Antonian, Susan Thompson has over 30 years of experience in philanthropy and nonprofit management. Prior to joining the Hemisfair Conservancy, she served as Executive Director of AVANCE – San Antonio, where she helped transform the lives of 5,000+ children and parents each year. She also spent five years at the San Antonio Area Foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from Rice University, bringing a strong educational foundation to her new role.

In her new role, Thompson will oversee the strategic direction and operations of the Hemisfair Conservancy, focusing on expanding the organization’s impact, strengthening donor relationships, and driving forward innovative programs that address environmental sustainability, inclusivity, and economic development for downtown San Antonio. She will work closely with the board of directors, the staff of both the Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation (HPARC) and the Conservancy, as well as community partners to further the Hemisfair Conservancy’s goals.

“This is a great time to be part of Hemisfair,” said Andres Andujar, CEO of HPARC. “With Susan at the helm of the Conservancy, we are confident that Hemisfair will reach new heights, driving initiatives that will continue to build our community’s sense of pride for this beloved community-wide resource.”

Thompson’s commitment to the organization’s mission is deeply personal. Related to Patsy Steves, a woman who helped shape the landscape of San Antonio with her work during HemisFair ’68, and a founding member of the Hemisfair Conservancy Advisory board, this family connection further solidifies Thompson’s dedication to advancing the impactful work that the Hemisfair Conservancy is known.

Thompson expressed enthusiasm about joining Hemisfair Conservancy, stating, “I am thrilled to join such a dynamic and impactful organization and feel that I am coming full circle in my life. I am dedicated to building community, enhancing access for all in San Antonio, celebrating the environment, and continuing my family’s legacy at Hemisfair. It is an honor to join such a strong team, and I look forward to contributing positively.”

The Hemisfair Conservancy has a longstanding commitment to create one of the world’s great public places, and under Thompson’s leadership, the organization is poised to embark on new initiatives that will further the organization’s reach and effectiveness.
