SAN ANTONIO – First Friday downtown had a new vibe on Friday night with the opening of first new park in Hemisfair, Yanaguana Garden.
Andres Andujar, CEO of Hemisfair, said Friday was a beautiful night to open up the first park in the Hemisfair project and that they are happy with the number of families who showed up.
Yanaguana Garden features an awesome playground with structures that kids can climb on, swings, a sand area, even a sprinkler area where kids can cool off.
Andujar said the planning for this first new park of Hemisfair started in 2013 and took about a year to build.
“Yanaguana Garden is a play environment from pre-K to grey,” Andujar said. “So, the very smallest toddler can enjoy it safely, but the grey means, the grey-hair people like me can also enjoy it. So parents adults, grandparents and little children are all welcome.”
Nicholas Gomez brought his granddaughter to Yanaguana on Friday night and he said he was impressed.
“We think it’s awesome,” Gomez said. “It’s a positive thing for everybody and for the community.”
The second phase of Hemisfair is called Civic Park. It will be built at the corner of South Alamo and Market Street and is expected to be complete in 2018.
The official grand opening of Yanaguana Garden takes place on Saturday at 10 a.m.
There are a few lots that are free and open to the public on weekends, including the SAISD lot at Cesar Chavez and South Alamo and the GSA lots, right off of Cesar Chavez and Indianola.
