Hemisfair’s Civic Park to Begin Construction This Fall
The San Antonio City Council received a briefing yesterday on the future of Hemisfair’s Civic Park, the second in a series of three parks at the urban parks district. City Council reviewed the procurement process and $28 million contract for construction of the first phase, which will be released for competitive sealed proposals on Monday, Feb. 15. Construction on the park is anticipated to begin once the proposed contractor selection is approved by Council this fall.
“This is a huge step toward the long-anticipated groundbreaking of Hemisfair’s Civic Park,” said Andres Andujar, CEO of Hemisfair. “Parks have proven to be essential infrastructure in the pandemic as people turn to the safety, open spaces and fresh air of the outdoors. We look forward to reviewing the proposals from contractors who want to have a significant role in delivering a world-class park to San Antonio.”
Construction will be completed in two phases, the first of which encompasses nearly five acres of the nine-acre public park. The City’s Public Works Department, the Hemisfair team and park designer GGN developed the phasing plan, which steps back from areas that are impacted by design of the proposed mixed-use development adjacent to the park and balances the scope to funding allocated from the 2017 Municipal Bond, philanthropy and other funding sources.
The request for competitive sealed proposals for Civic Park Phase I construction will be available on the City’s website beginning Monday.
