Hemisfair launches #ParkItAtHome virtual programming for families

posted by on

Two free, unique and fun educational programs San Antonio families typically attend in-person at Hemisfair have moved online. The popular Story Time and Super Fun Saturday programs kicked off virtually last week as part of the organization’s #ParkItAtHome initiative in the wake of COVID-19.

“Nothing can replace the joy of hearing kids and families play and laugh together in Yanaguana Garden, but we hope these digital offerings will bring a smile to little faces in homes across San Antonio,” said Andres Andujar, Hemisfair CEO. “Our small team has been working behind the scenes to bring quality virtual programming to the community until it’s safe to gather again.”

Hemisfair launched the #ParkItAtHome digital resource page last month with do-it-yourself activities and book recommendations for families to experience together as time allows. Activities range from bubble wands and bubble solution made with items found around the house to “Sí Se Puede SA” heart messages inspired by Centro San Antonio.

Last week, Hemisfair celebrated its first virtual edition of Story Time. Each Tuesday at 10 a.m., Hemisfair volunteer “Ms. Kim” reads a pre-selected book via a private Zoom meeting to the first 100 families who register. The books are paired with a science, technology, engineering, art and math-related activity. Virtual Story Time is free and made possible by Cavender Auto Family, Community First Health Plans, OCI Solar Power and individual donations to the Hemisfair Conservancy.

On Saturday, Hemisfair launched a special eight-week virtual Super Fun Saturday series with children’s recording artist Andyroo & the Andyrooniverse. Using music and storytelling, children are introduced to social skills such as teamwork, listening, environmental stewardship and individuality. Super Fun Saturday takes place live at 11 a.m. each Saturday through June 27 on Hemisfair’s Facebook page and is made possible by a generous donation from H-E-B.
