Hemisfair Phase 1 Design Details Revealed
NOVEMBER 15, 2013 (SAN ANTONIO, TX) — After months of public input, vetting and tweaking, the Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation (HPARC) invites the public to view the schematic design for the southwest corner parcel at Cesar Chavez and South Alamo Streets. The design will be presented to the Historic and Design Review Commission at 3:00pm November 20th, immediately followed by a public presentation that evening at 6:00pm at the Magik Theatre*. The groundbreaking project will include over 4 acres of active play and recreational opportunities that encourage interaction, creativity, exploration, learning, and fitness for all ages and abilities.
“Our goal all along has been to put the ‘park’ back in Hemisfair Park,” Mayor Julián Castro said. “This Play Escape provides a wonderful, accessible space to be enjoyed by San Antonio families for years to come.”
The southwest corner of Hemisfair will include several state-of-the-art climbing structures, an acequia-inspired splash pad, a riverbank sand dig, plenty of shaded courtyards, and more. At the public presentation on November 20th, Hemisfair CEO Andres Andujar will outline the design process and its results. Andujar will unveil and describe inventive features, reveal exciting renderings, and discuss how historic design and structures will play a role in the new park experience.
Andujar is excited to deliver the new recreational and educational grounds to the community. “Thoughtful integration of art, culture, history, and sustainability will make this environment the new standard for innovative play,” he explains, “Right here in the heart of San Antonio.” Construction will begin in May 2014.
*The Nov. 20th Design Presentation will be held from 6-7:30PM at the Magik Theatre, 420 S. Alamo Street. It is open to the public.
