Are We on the Right Track?
San Antonio, TX (July 23 2014)—Hundreds of San Antonio residents are expected to participate in a public workshop July 29th at Sunset Station to steer design of Hemisfair’s civic park, the second and largest of three future parks to be built in the Hemisfair District. Lead design firm Gustafson Guthrie Nichol of Seattle will present alternative design concepts and participants will have the opportunity to voice their preferences and concerns for the options. The community’s feedback will greatly influence how the park is laid out.
Last year, a series of focus groups, stakeholder interviews, a large public workshop, and an online survey produced the Civic Park Vision and Programming Plan which became the foundation for design. Next Tuesday’s workshop is part of Hemisfair’s integrated public outreach protocol, allowing the public to test design progress every step of the way for each of Hemisfair’s parks.
The workshop format will be interactive, consisting of 20-30 round tables led by volunteer facilitators. The program will begin at 6:00PM sharp with a ten-minute overview presentation by Andres Andujar, CEO of Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation (HPARC), followed by an in depth analysis of the park concepts led by designer Kathryn Gustafson. At 6:45PM, volunteer facilitators at each table will ask a series of questions, evaluating each concept and identifying common themes. At 7:30PM, facilitators from each table will present the groups’ preferences and concerns to the room.
